A girl with golden tattoos and magic abilities
Mysterious golden-eyed animals watching from the snowy forest.
A shadowy figure hunting her.
Two secretive guys.
A frozen lake of secrets
And an utterly adorable cake-stealing otter - wait, what?
When Shay and Svenn save a girl with golden animal tattoos, she brings chaos and danger into their world. From the beginning, it's clear she's not normal. Why doesn't she remember anything? Who is the shadowy figure who attacked her? Why does she see golden-eyed animals whenever she's in danger (which is a lot) Why is Shadow Man now killing people in town? And why can't she go a day without being stabbed, shot or causing chaos?
And why can she feel people's pain?
The answers are hidden in her memories - but she's also hiding from them.
HERE'S A SNEAK PEEK OF THE FIRST CHAPTER
“It’s okay, you’re not going to die. It... it’s just a scratch.”
“Just a scratch! I’ve seen smaller cuts in a Caesarean.”
“Shut up, Svenn. You’re scaring her.”
“Scaring you, you mean.”
The voices swam around my head as I came round. Two boys knelt at my side, peering anxiously down at me. Night turned their faces to shadows, splinters of moonlight carving out their panicked features through the whisper of falling snow. All around, a snow-laden forest thrashed and wailed in the storm.
Then I realised I couldn’t move and I was lying in a pool of my own blood.
Terror shot through me. My teeth clattered too violently to speak. I tried to squirm away, but pain spliced through my side.
The boy nearest to me grabbed my hand. He was about eighteen, his fingers icy and slippery with blood. My blood. Dark, snow-coated hair fell into his pale face. “You won’t die!” He gasped. He seemed to be reassuring himself more than me, his eyes black pools of terror. “We’re going to save you.”
“You mean I will!”
My eyes flickered to the other boy as he spoke.
“Hi,” he said cheerfully, pressing a blood-soaked jacket to my side. As I gaped at him, he pushed his blond hair back with his shoulder, blue eyes twinkling at me. “Relax. You got stabbed in the best place in Sonderszun. Outside my house!”
“S-sta...” My voice locked in my throat. My eyes flittered to the bloodied jacket. What was that, sticking out between his fingers... shining with blood in the moonlight?
“No, don’t look!” The dark-haired boy shrieked, but too late; I’d seen the knife handle jutting out of my side. Panic flooded me – I shook violently, trying to snatch shreds of memories, but my mind was empty.
“Deep breaths.” The scared boy stammered, then screamed, “Please don’t die!” He flinched, realising that wasn’t the best choice of words. “I mean... it’s okay. You’re going to be okay.”
The blond boy laughed. “Of course, she’s going to be okay.” He looked way too happy, seeing as I was bleeding out on his driveway. “I’ve imagined this situation a thousand times. I know what to do. I’ve even pictured the newspaper headlines. Defenceless girl saved from death by handsome doctor...”
“What the hell, Svenn?” The dark-haired boy screamed, wringing my fingers like a woman giving birth. “Shut up and save her!”
“Okay, can you take a photo?”
“NO!”
It was too much. The world was sucked away. Before the darkness claimed me I saw a tawny wolf with gold-flecked fur sitting calmly by the terrified boy. It studied me with golden eyes and seemed to nod. Then my head fell back against the snowy road and there was nothing.
